Best Time to be alive: California 1960-1980

California dreaming. A tumultuous, fractal, sub-infinite series of images. Deep green forests and rugged mountains. Sun-drenched coasts with surfers riding unfeasibly large waves. Burning deserts and fertile valleys. Vast sprawling townscapes scattered with deep blue pools linked suburb to suburb by enormous, mustang-filled freeways. UCLA. Berkeley. All those funny people camped out in VWs around Mt Shasta. La Jolla and the Scripps Institute,  Everything the good life could be, democratically arrived at, and mass produced for ordinary people. Which made this State, in the peak years 1960-1980 the cultural and social centre of the world.  Our hope, our dream, our shimmering light.

It was defence that caused California to boom as the USA began its long tilt towards the Pacific after 1945.   The US Government’s act of undeclared Keynesianism funded Cold War icons such as  Lockheed (Burbank) North American (Inglewood) McDonnell Douglas(Santa Monica, Long Beach), Hughes(Culver City)  and Northrop (Hawthorne). As the money flowed through these companies and out the other side, it funded not only the great learning institutions, but also one of the most comfortable and agreeable lifestyles that had ever been known. Everyone, potentially, was in, although if you were black or Hispanic, your share of the pot was going to be much, much smaller.  Hollywood, to its credit, was self-funding.  But its endless output of iconic films and TV shows afforded the USA a soft power capability that was equal to at least ten carrier battle groups. All of this in turn grew the next generation of industry: Information, games and now AI. For this was a culture built not on oil, or gold or military power, but in the last resort on brains. In places, it still is.

You will by now,  gentle reader, have intuited your own huge list of favourite films, TV shows, books  popular musical singers, foods and brands which are your California. Yet it is poets who see  most clearly, capturing  the distilled essence of time and place most of all  when they set their thoughts  to music. Those poets were  Eagles Don Henley and Glenn Frey, whose songs such as Tequila Sunrise, Hotel California, The Last Resort and others managed to capture the crazy contradictory kaleidoscope  of hopes, dreams, indulgences and despairs in  a land and place at the  leading edge of our species’ experience.  Perhaps the shimmering light it is now growing dim. . But for us the word “California” carries the hope that somewhere out there still lies the possibility of a prosperous, future.

Why Easter is a time for understanding- a message from the Board

Once again we share one of our management to staff communiques, which we believe are a model for other companies and organisations

Now, it’s come to our attention that there have been certain ill-disguised whisperings and feelings about the staff leave arrangements for this Easter Bank Holiday weekend. Specifically-how come only the Editorial Board get Thursday afternoon off? The answer is both simple and complicated.

Firstly, the Thursday before Easter (Maundy Thursday) is an ancient time hallowed custom. So someone has to have time off. Obviously it can’t be everybody , as our productivity figures, already low, would just fall through the floor. So the Board got in consultants, who came up with a scheme based on geography, finance and above all peoples’ real needs. And this is how it works out.

Most of you it turns out live within 5 or ten miles of this building. OK, a couple of you trundle in from places like Kingston or Haywards Heath, but its really not too far to get way when the weekend begins, is it? Whereas we on the Board have our holiday homes in amazingly far-flung places. The Cotswolds. Perigord. Even Tuscany. Of course we need that extra time to get to the airport. And what about at the other end, we have to get to that shop in the village, the one that does that marvellous olive bread, and check the wine cellar, or the weekend’s half-gone. Whereas you lot, in some pub in Croydon-well you’re right on top of it as you stumble out of your little flats.

Each of us needs to understand other people and their different needs and pressures. Clearly we on the Board have somewhat different needs to the rest of you. Easter is a time of understanding. And with the annual salary reviews coming up, we hope you will understand once again.

Doing something is better than nothing. Here’s one way

“You’re always telling us how bad we are!” It’s a small, but steady complaint from a certain group of readers. “Telling us how we’re wasting antibiotics! Polluting the skies and the oceans! Squandering our money in fruitless luxury , dissipation and depravity!” We take exception to the last, as we have never scolded anyone for Depravity. If done with due regard to Health and Safety, it can be a valuable method of weight loss. But as for the other charges- yes. we can be a bit over-censorious and pessimistic. And if we tell you all is lost, why try at all?

There’s nothing like having a sense of agency, a sense that you can actually make a difference, to restore morale. Even if that difference is small. Which is why we offer a chance to do One Thing. And that thing is to help out with a beach clean. We don’t need to tell you just how bad the situation in the oceans is. The Marine Conservation Society [1] has an excellent site for all matters oceanographic. But if you click further into their webpage you’ll find a section on Beach Cleans. Where groups of volunteers are co ordinated to go out, collect and record the vast mountains of debris which wash up on our beaches

Now this has several advantages over doing it by yourself. Firstly, it’s safer because there will be people around. Beaches and shores of any kinds can be dangerous places. Secondly collection and disposal can be jointly organised, making them much more efficient. Thirdly, the MCS and can make real use of the data you throw up. And last-think of the exercise and weight loss, with none of the drawbacks that Depravity brings. Is this becoming a no-brainer, or what?
